Emperor Theodosius Died

Theodosius I, who is also called Theodosius the Great, died on this day in A.D. 395. He was a devout Christian and a capable military leader who controlled both the eastern and western parts of the Roman Empire. His sons were the young emperors Honorius and Arcadius whose attempts to rule were dominated by generals and court ministers. Galla Placidia was his daughter. She was taken as hostage by the Goths when they invaded Italy. His niece Serena married his general Stilicho who attempted to act as regent to both of Theodosius' sons after the great emperor died.
