Pat Southern says that on the 10th and 31st of May, the Roman legions celebrated the equivalent of the legion's birthday. This was the natalis aquilae (eagle's birthday) at which time the soldiers performed a standards-decorating ceremony (rosaliae signorum). Southern thinks the celebration would have included ritual sacrifice, parades, and feasting.
