CC Flickr User woody1778a On this day in ancient Roman history, Constantine achieved an important victory in a Battle at Adrianople. This Battle at Adrianople is a bit earlier than the fateful battle in which Valens and his army were killed by the Goths. Constantine wasn't fighting a foreign foe. In his book Constantine - Roman Emperor, Christian Victor (New York: Overlook Press (2010)), Paul Stephenson says the two co-emperors Licinius and Constantine came to blows after Constantine had defeated the Sarmatians in a battle that Licinius said violated his treaty terms with the Sarmatians, but that Constantine was so proud of he had minted coins and added a title of Sarmatian defeater to his name.
