About.com has a new ad that appears to have an Arabic-Roman numeral hybrid with a double capital M. Today the abbreviation MM may represent 2000, as in dates like MMXII for our current year, or 1,000,000, for advertising purposes, which can be confusing, especially since mm, in lower case, stands for millimeters. In his writing about Latin inscriptions, J.E. Sandys says the Roman numeral for 1000 was used in connection with the word for steps to represent a Roman mile, MP, and not on its own as the number 1000, in Julius Caesar's day.
