End of the Severans

On this day in ancient history- March 18:

On this day in A.D. 235, the last of the Severan emperors was assassinated. Roman Emperor Alexander SeverusHe was Alexander Severus (r. A.D. 222-235; born 208), an appropriate emperor to highlight during women's history month because, as DIR says, when he came to power, "[f]or the first time in its imperial history, the empire of Rome was de facto, though not de iure, governed by women." The two women were his mother and grandmother, Julia Mamaea and Julia Maesa. Alexander Severus came to power at the death of his cousin the showy Syrian emperor Elagabalus.
