They were located in the sanctuary of Olympia in Elis, but did you know that Elis was not near the Athenian part of Greece, but in the Peloponnese, the area named for Tantalus' son Pelops, in Greek mythology, and dominated by the Spartans, in the historical record of ancient Greece?
