This day in early ancient Roman history was the start of the new year. The Rogue Classicist says it was probably on this day, prior to 153 B.C., that consuls entered office.

The month of March was so full of Roman religious events there was a special day of rest. The Roman month of March is also the month made notorious for its Ides by Shakespeare, in Julius Caesar.
