Apollo © Clipart.com Ancient calendars rarely match modern calendar dates. The closest are dates on the Roman calendar because we use an adapted version of the Roman calendar today. The Greek calendar, which had a nineteen-year cycle, varied from one city to the next, although there was a calendar for general use that measured time from the Olympic Games. During their month of Thargelion, ancient Athens celebrated an agricultural festival to honor Apollo. In addition to offering the god the first fruits of the season, there was a sinister aspect to this occasion.
